When using any form of non-integrated access platform with a forklift, it is essential that you follow the guidance from the HSE, in the form of PM28. Find more information here.

See an example video below. This is a working platform that we use in our warehouse.

What is a Forklift Access Platform?
Forklift Access Platforms are also called Safety Baskets, Man Cages, Man Up Cages and Non-Integrated Working Platforms. Simply put they are used for safe working at height when carrying our exceptional, non-routine tasks. For routine tasks, tools such as cherry pickers or scissor lifts should be used. Click here to see our range of cherry pickers and scissor lifts.

An Access Platform is a secure cage with or without an access door, which, provided it is used correctly secures its user against the danger of falling whilst carrying out work. Do not, under any circumstances, look to gain access to high areas via any other means associated with a fork lift truck.

Man Up Cages are purely mechanical with no hydraulic parts. This ensures strong reliability and safety when using them. Despite this however, you must ensure that you carry out LOLER examinations on your Access Platform every 6 months, to comply with legislation. Bendigo Mitchell is fully certified to carry out this work on your behalf.

For reference, the Health & Safety Executive defines a Non-Integrated Working Platform as follows:
“‘Non-integrated working platforms’ are attachments for use in conjunction with forklift trucks to elevate people so they can work at height, but they have no controls in the platform that allow someone in the platform to control the platform lift height or move the truck; ie all truck and working platform movements are controlled by the truck operator.”

Man up cages are secured to the forklift truck by inserting the forks into fork pockets, and securing the forks with pins inserted behind the heels of the forks, thus eliminating the risk of the cage sliding off the forks.

Before purchasing an access platform, it is worth considering whether other means of access may suit your business better. Bendigo Mitchell is able to sell or hire scissor lifts and cherry pickers. There are then the obvious alternatives such as scaffolding towers, and even good old fashioned ladders.

All of our Fork Lift Truck Access Platforms comply with HSE’s PM28 legislation.
